Religious paranoia

The problem with believers, let them be political, religious or spiritual, that follow a creed without philosophical questioning its foundations imply to close oneself into a sort of mental box.

This would make them feeling separate from the rest of the world outside the box, and this self-imposed repression would manifest into envy and anger for the freedom that others have. This stop the flux of love that encompasses us all and taught by all religions; worse than that people need to realize that what their mind is focused on will eventually manifest. As everything in the universe is a vibration so is our body. Our mind functions as a generator and amplifier of frequencies and, depending from the vibrations we set our body to, we do attract similar ones. It is the famous “law of attraction” that nowadays is all around the tube.

A person with such mental misconceptions would therefore change his/her behavior towards the outside world that feels threatening. At the same time the vibrations emitted will connect and attract similar ones, manifesting the fear into material reality.

I have nothing against any Christian, Jewish or Muslim believer, but I realized that the depression and fanatist of some of them that believes the “others” to be enemies. These people do not realize that, through their fears, they are creating the monster they are afraid of. Reasonable people could understand and notice this trick and then forgive this mentality as a misconception, but impulsive people would respond with anger and therefore initiate a wicked chain.

Indiscriminately and independently from where you are and what you are, do not feel repressed and realize your true nature.

A flower never complains to be in the wrong position even if it grows under a big tree that cast shade and cold on it.

Believe first in the God within you and be in peace with what surrounds you and remember that if you think love you manifest love, if you think evil you manifest evil.

We are what we eat…and what we think.

On philosphy…and philosophers

Glory to thy philosopher! Glory to the exponent of knowledge, defender of truth and reason.

The self proclaimed philosopher is eloquent in logic, on politics or ethics. Intoxicated by coffee and medicine, they lead the the life of passions and vices as mere animals. Is reason the capacity of thinking and knowing complicate theories? This is erudition my dear philosopher, if you believe to be great for that you are less than the animals you eat.

How can you speak of reason when you lead a life of vices? Where is the soul or mind you claim to have if you are not able to get over your vices and embody the philosophy you preach? You argue for freedom, why are you bounded by your vices?

Philosophers are the head of society, here the clear explanation why everything is scrambling apart.

Nazi diets

Vegan? Vegetarian? Fruitarian or raw? What is the next trend, and what is really best for our body? People said to have tried everything, “I have been vegan for a week but it did not work, so I started eating meat again.”

You are a food Nazi I would answer! First of all how can a diet can give any benefits after a few days of weeks, you need to experience it for at least three months you have the first glimpse of what it does really mean to be vegetarian, vegan or what you choose to be. And second, what is that you are looking for while changing your diet? Do not come and tell me the nonsense of the animals and because you love them you want to protect them, and then you go to eat surrogates of burgers that taste of cow but that are made of soya and God only knows what else is there to enhance its taste.

Yes you are a Nazi I repeat. Extremist therefore sick as the sickness you want to avoid. A diet is not something that you take overnight, you might to experiments and trials but you do not need to take any choice, just allow it to happen.

Eight years ago I forced myself to be vegetarian and my mind was in continuous war with the body. The mind was saying no because it is bad! When the body, sored and fatigued by the hours of training, was simply asking for proteins and vitamins that evidently my Nazi mind was not providing adequately. This is what happen to all of you that want to become vegetarian, vegan or anything else. After giving up the forced vegetarian diet I was not caring much but I realized after three months lived in India that I never touched meat/fish nor eggs. Gosh I was vegetarian for the longest time of my life and nobody, not even my mind, every told me so! The difference is really subtle but fundamental, one is Nazism as I previously mentioned the other is an act of consciousness, connection with our own nature. The food-Nazi are commonly nasty with all the people they meet because under the Nazi’s eyes all others are sinner, stupid people that are only capable of eating like pigs; Really alike most of the strict (and the less educated) Muslims that see the evil in any pork-eater. [nothing against Islam]

Why Nazi cannot avoid talking about how great is their diet and how they are saving the planet with their diet. You are hypocrite and masking your ignorance behind your own ethics. Please do eat your pineapple and avocado, dates and bananas and soy products, you are saving the animal of the world but still financing a consume of exotic products that in no way could grow in the land you live in. Drink your almond milk, soy milk or what ever surrogate and be happy to be saving a cow when you are basically buying and financing a system that sells basically tetra pack filled with 90% water and some few grains, all for the modest price of not less than 3 euros. And you, dear Nazi, if empowered you would force others to eat what you consider now ideal, good and ethic.

What is your ethic about? Who really care about your ethic? God the Humans, Nature? If you take God and Nature, they booth do not care much about what we devolved monkey eat. Nature will go on even if we explode an atomic and be extinct with all the animals of this planet. Nature had never began and never will end so stop flattering yourself thinking you are the super human saving the world. From the man perspective, you are a Nazi (gosh how I love this world) because you think at the same way as your worse enemies like Monsanto. The latter wants to plant the same soy all over the world and you, my dear nut-tarian, you want the entire world to eat what you eat. Independently from cultures, creeds and climates.

With this post I am not fighting any particular diet per se, but the silly mentality that many come with when they approach a new diet. I personally have tried being Vegan for almost a year, good health and good to feel clean and strong but till I was in Thailand this was easy cause of the abundance of fresh fruits and nuts and a culture that can better understand such choice. When back to Europe I was struggling in between people inviting me over for dinner and preparing special vegetarian meals (not aware of what I was eating exactly) and then I had to refuse a soup because it had a bit of butter, chocolate because with some milk and even the delicious lasagne of my grand mother because with cheese.

My mind was the Nazi forcing this ideology on the body, but soon my body decided to revolt against it and then I started consuming animal products again.

My decision of not eating animals does have a sustainable reason behind, a health one and even a spiritual one. But all these three arose naturally and are well accepted by my body. So I do respect people like my dear Serena that can live with fruits and vegans like Sam. I respect them because they reached a state of consciousness and awareness that allows them to be balanced and happy in their decisions.

So please my friend, be one with your mind and body, practice some yoga, sport or martial art and keep your body healthy. Meditate and with enough introspection some food will drop out of your diet when other will be necessary in particular seasons when useless in others. I am basically vegan but when my

body needs eggs, cheese, yogurt or even honey I do offer it to my body as a payback for the lovely life it is allowing me to have.

Every ancient culture have a particular diet, does it means that we have to try them all or to choose one and stick to it? Let yourself float and experience what your feel like to experience, what life brings you and accept that even others might be in a different conscious stage than yours.

Be contented with what you are and grateful for being in good health, share your knowledge but never impose it on others as you do not want others to impose their cultures on you. Remember you are not superior neither inferior to none, you are a special and unique being. Buddha was not Buddhist but he had the courage of being himself, Jesus did the same and so all the greatest prophets or mind that walked on this planet. Be yourself, simply be yourself. Nothing bad will never arise if you are truly connected with your inner.

On the lotus posture

The essence of Yoga can be found in the wonderful verses of the Bhagavad Gita. The passages from the 10th to 15th of the sixth chapter on Dhyana Yoga (Topic on Meditation) are dedicated on giving a concise yet satisfying explanation on the purpose of Yoga and on how to meditate.

Might the meditator, freed from all material possessions and desires and with quiet mind constantly unite his mind with the Absolute Self. (6:10)

The yogi should find a comfortable sit and to concentrate his mind to a fix point so to purify his mind. This is Yoga. (6:11-12)

After these preliminary instruction comes the most important fact, probably the only description of Asana (posture) mentioned in the whole book: holding oneself firm without moving, keeping the body, head and neck in one straight line as looking to one’s tip of the nose but yet not looking in any directions. Being one’s mind tranquil and quiet, free from fear and engaged in pure devotion might the meditator lose himself into me withdrawing the mind from everything else. (6:13-14) Always connecting the mind in this manner, the meditator, the one whose mind is mastered, gains the peace, which is centered into Me, which is the ultimate liberation. (6:15)

Interestingly it came obvious that the only Asana mentioned in the whole Bhagavad Gita is Padmasana or basically to be sitting in the lotus pose. Another interesting coincidence is the parallel between the 15th passage we just mentioned and the second Yoga Sutra of Patanjali: Yogash chitta vritti nirodha (1:2). Yoga, says Patanjali, is the cessation of the fluctuation of the mind. And even Patanjali considered that the right Asana is the one that can be done effortlessly and that leads us to meditate towards infinity.

Pandasana
Art by Mattia Michielan

The whole sequences of Ashtanga Yoga or of Hata Yoga are developed with the core aim of preparing the body to stay in the posture of the lotus, undisturbed, for hours and meditate. That’s why Padmasana is considered the perfect asana.

Many people, especially in the west, cannot achieve this basic posture not even after years of practice. How to reach the lotus posture?

Starting from the premise that even though we all share a body that looks similar, this wonderful machine is unique and customized for us and by us, therefore not all the bodies have the exact same capacities.

During practice you will notice that some of us might be more flexible on the shoulders when really stiff on their hips joint, or vice-versa. Others are really stiff in general when other people might be flexible and that can achieve difficult postures effortlessly. With a constant practice we will realize that Asana are not only to gain flexibility and strength but they also are tools to demarcate our limits, to recognize and accept our physical capacities and to surrender to them. If the practice is regular and dedicate improvements will suddenly open even the stiffest of the bodies. What necessary is to remove from our practice is all signs of expectations. Practice for the fun of practicing as you enjoy a song for its beautiful melody rather than because it is fast to end.

Another important aspect to keep in mind is that if we start practicing at 20-30 or more year-old, many of our joints might be calcified therefore improvements will result much more slow and hard. In the west we have a tradition of sitting on chairs while working and even while eating when in India people traditionally sit on the floor to eat, to watch television and to rest. This connection with mother earth implies people sitting crossed-legs to find a comfortable posture and therefore training their hip joints to remain open.

So if we want to improve our Padmasana we need to start with sitting cross-legs more time during the day. We can remove the shoes while working, bringing up our legs to cross legs starting from a few minutes and stretching it even to hours. Try to make an habit out of it and to sit as long as possible with crossed-legs. When you are at home watching a movie or working on the laptop try to sit on a carpet on the floor and slowly go into Bhadda Konasana (the butterfly). Surely in the beginning this position will not be comfortable at all, so you can arrange some pillow below your buttock to lift it up and allow the hips to be less contracted. You cannot expect to un-do the process of stiffening your body you did and you keep doing in your daily life in a few hours spent weekly on the mat. Yoga heals but to allow the miracle to happen we need to put devotion into it. Let the practice of Yoga become part of your life and embrace every posture in the movements you normally do, play with it and spice your daily routine with some funny and challenging posture. So brush your teeth and stay in Vrikshasana (tree posture), tide your shoes and go down in Parsvottanasana and switch off the lights with your feet as you do in the end of Uttita Hasta Padangusthasana. And do not forget the most important thing…the smile!

SHARATH JOIS CONFERENCE Notes

February 14th, 2015
*with the Highest Respect for Sharathji

Ajñāna-Timirāndhasya
Jñānāñjana-Śalākayā
Caksur Unmīlitam Yena
Tasmai Śri-Gurave Namah

“Dhyanabindu Upanishad says, how many asanas are there? How many living beings are there, that many asanas are there! There’s four different types of living beings. There are lots of living beings in the water; there’s lots of plants, trees, and there are lots of reptiles; lots of birds. So like this, so many types o flicking beings are there. Also, there are that many asanas. Only who knows these asanas? Ishwara, the Supreme Soul, or Shiva. Only Ishawara knows all these asanas. In Yoga Sutra it doesn’t say,min Hatha Yoga Pradipika also it only describes a few asanas. How this comes? Through lineage. Through Guru-Shishya Parampara. So on this Parampara, there are 600 up to 800 asanas. This is enough for us, that is also too much. We need several rebirth to do all these asanas. But many times, not all the asana will be siddhi to everyone. If you just observe different people doing asanas, some people are very good at back bending, but when they come to Eka Pada they can’t do. We all look alike. We are all humans, we all have two legs, two hands. But our body is different. Some are good at some asanas, some have difficulty in different asanas. So different body can do different asanas well, it’s easy for them. Then the Practice comes. Naturally some students are good at back bendin. When they have difficulty in Eka Pada they have to work, keep on doing it. My Grandfather always used to say ‘You have to do one asana one thousand times to make it perfect.’ One thousand times means how many years? I know many of you don’t have patience to do all these things. But, IF YOU DON’T HAVE PATIENCE, YOU CAN’T LEARN YOGA. So how is Asana related to Yoga? Many people have this question. Can you call Asana as a Yoga? Yes, definitely! Without Asana, there is no Yoga. Asana is the Fundamental, is the Foundation to build up your Spiritual Building. Asana, the third limb…whoever establishes this third limb properly, then there will be no disorders of the mind. So the third limb is a very important limb. In Hatha Pradipika it says, first, stable mind. Without stable mind, how can you think about Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, when you’re mind itself is out of your control? When you’re not able to control your mind, how can you think about Dhyana, Dharana? It is impossible. When you sit in meditation, where is your mind? Your mind is in your control? No. Mind is distracted. It’s going here, there, here, there. So how to control your mind? Asana practice with the breathing technique. The body is controlled by the mind, the mind is controlled by the breath you take. So when you do inhalation, exhalation, inhalation, exhalation, it calms the mind. Just by doing Surya Namaskara you feel the calmness will come to you. When that calmness comes, when that is established strongly within you, then you can sit for Pranayama. Before going to Pranayama, your lungs have to be stronger, your nervous system have to be purified, otherwise you can’t sit. Then Pratyahara will be very difficult. Pratyahara is withdrawal of the senses. Once Pratyahara is strongly established, you submerse yourself in that, that becomes Dharana. Dharana is establishing within you when you withdraw the senses. Then Dhyana is possible. Sometimes when you’re doing asana, when you’re in higher level, you’re practicing for many years, sometimes you feel that everything becomes One. Just doing Primary Series, sometimes, everything, mall the nonsense around you won’t disturb you. You are so focused in your asana, that becomes Pratyahara there. Many times now when you do asana, you are always looking at others ‘Oh, what he’s doing? Oh, Kapotasana.’ Like that, your mind is moving here and there, very distracted. But once you are established, once you do for many many years of asana practice…for me, asana is like Meditation. For me, asana is like Dharana, like Pratyahara. How? Because my mind is only focused on Asana, only focused on my Practice. EVERYTHING HAPPENS INTERNALLY, NOTHING EXTERNAL. No distraction externally. That is why this Asana is very important. How you use that Asana, that is very important. Last Conference as I told you, many just come and pass by Mysore. ‘I’ll study with Sharath’ and they come and they go. Like that you can’t feel Yoga. You can’t see the Shala, see me do a couple of Led class and you’ll say ‘This is all. I’ve been to Mysore.’ And you go, put on Internet you’ve been to Mysore ‘I’m big Yoga Teacher’. You take photo with Sharath. It’s good for that, that’s all. But this Yoga is not taking photo, it’s the experience which should happen within you. It should awaken you internally. It should change you internally. It should change your perception towards this life. This life is not just going to the office and working, earn money, eat, sleep, hang around with friends. There is a different meaning for this life. You will enjoy the life only when you realize internally these changes that happen within you. Then you see this world in a different way. Then Real enjoyment comes. You can party everyday. How many days can you party? Four days? Five days continuously? After that? You get bored. You want to do something else. This is not enjoyment. This is just your time passing, that’s all. You get something, you do something, it’s very attractive. Then after few days you get bored, you do something else. Because you have lots of choice. You can do that. You can do this. You don’t do anything properly! If you do that, ‘I only want to do some Yoga.’, you don’t want to do Samyoga…The Real Enjoyment comes when it strongly grows within you. The Sadhana is also like that. I can’t push you, make you do Sadhana. Only when you have the Thirst within you. Why you drink water? Because you have the thirst. The Thirst will take you towards water, water will never come to you! What, water will come to you? You’re thirsty, water will say ‘oh ok, coming, wait!’? It never says like that. Only you have to go to water. When you’re hungry, you have to go to the chicken and cook the food. So, Yoga is like that. Yoga is like the water. WE need IT. Only when we have the Thirst to know Yoga is, then only we will make the effort to know. And getting water is little easier than getting Yoga. Because Yoga needs lots of Sadhana to understand what it is. So going back to this Lineage…my Grandfather, Krishnamacharya, they all knew so many Asanas. In this Parampara, we don’t put so much concentration on Kriyas, Shat Kriyas. Why? Your Asana itself is enough to purify your nervous system, to purify all the disorders in the body. Kriyas are easy way to do it. When you do Neti, Neti is good only when you have cold. You can’t do Neti everyday. It’s not necessary. When you have cold, then you take the two Jala Neti, Sutra Neti is better, and you clean with the thread. By doing Asana itself, many changes will happen. Internally your digestive organs will work properly. Sometimes when you start Yoga you get Diarrhea. You get feverish sometime. You don’t have temperature but internally you feel uneasy. This is all changes which is happening inside you. In the old Shala, one lady came, fifteen twenty years back. She didn’t come for two days, she didn’t come for practice. My Grandfather asked ‘Why you didn’t come?’ and she said she had so much Diarrhea. And he said ‘Don’t worry, it’s Yoga Diarrhea, Asana Diarrhea.’ (laughter) So once you do Asanas, the cleansing will happen. There’s lots of benefit. Especially when you do deep back bending for the first time and you’re trying to grab your ankle. All the poison inside you will flush out. Many many years, my Grandfather started teaching me handstands, all the series of handstands are there. Once he was teaching that, I needed so much, I was so hungry! Everyday hungry hungry! I used to eat six, seven chapatis! I used to come home, ask my Mother make more chapatis. My mother would cry making chapatis! (endearing laughter) After the back bending started, he said ‘Now you are ready to catch.’ One day he surprised me. He made me catch here, in the ankle. When that day started, no hungry! (laughter) The hunger just disappeared. So see the diet, how it changes. The asanas, if you do it properly, a lot of changes will happen in your body. You don’t feel like eating too much. So there’s lots of changes that should happen, month by month, year by year. So that changes should happen. Body becomes very light. Body becomes more flexible. So many of you are beginners now, you’re starting now, one or two years, I just wanted you to know this. There’s long way to go. (chuckles) Long way to go in the Sadhana. SADHANA IS FOR LIFE, FOR ONE LIFE. ‘I just want to do Sadhana for four years and leave.’ It’s not possible like that. You won’t learn anything. Sadhana is for your Life. It grows with you. When you grow older, your Sadhana also will become older. Grow older, wiser. Some pele are old but they’re not wise. Some people are young but they’re wise. Why is that? Because of that Sadhana. But for Yoga there is no age. Last time I told my Grandfather’s Mantra. Lazy people cannot do Yoga. Young man can practice. Old man can practice. Very old man can practice. Who’s sick, he can practice. Who doesn’t have strength, he can also practice. He will gain strength. Lazy man, he can’t!

UTHPLUTIH

Uthplutih is to build up strength in your lower abdomen. All the Bandhas will get stronger in that posture. Uthplutih means ‘lift up’, that’s all. There are several variations in Padmasana. Baddha Padmasana is there, keeping back your hand, there are many variations of Padmasana. This one is to just lift up. To build up strength in your arms, Bandhas.

DEAD MAN

Shavasana you do last. Last. You don’t have to do. It will happen. (gives a knowing look; laughter in the hall) Shava is dead body. You have to lay like a dead body, that is Shavasana. There is a posture which comes later but now I don’t want to tell you because you will try it. The asana will come in Sixth Series. After our practice, this is just relaxing. That is called as Sukhasana. Sukha means Happy Asana after practice. (smiles and laughter)

FOREVER YOUNG

Sarvangasana, Shirshasana, Padmasana, these three are very important asanas. Sarvangasana, Shirshasana allow the blood to circulate properly upside down. Blood will circulate nicely to the whole body. To store Amrita Bindhu. This place (places hand on his head) is where Bindu is stored. Bindu is Vital Energy which we need to keep ourself young. It’s called seminal fluid or something like that in English. So that is very important to keep ourself healthy and young. So this is stored here. So when it keeps dropping down everyday, you become older and older. If you see, when you get older, your metabolism, your cell, your everything slows down. But once you do this Yoga, when you’re generating internal Energy, especially when you do Sarvangasana, Shirshasana, the Amritu Bindu is stored here. It is not dropping down. When you’re standing up straight, it keeps on dropping. But when you’re upside down, you store Amrita Bindu in your head. So that is why when you see Yogis, they look younger. Why? Because everything works. I spoke to one Doctor. He says why Yogis become younger because everything becomes slower. Everything will age very slowly. When start doing all these breathing technique then you slow down the pace. So your life also will expand. Every cell will live longer than the usual person who are not doing Yoga. So that is what the Pranayama means, when you’re doing this breathing technique. 21,600 times everyday, inhalation, exhalation, inhalation, exhalation happens. Once we do asana practice, we are dragging the breath, deep inhalation, deep exhalation. So Ostend of taking two breaths normally, you take one breath. So you’re slowing that. So like that everything will slow. That’s why the Yoga Practice will expand, will extend your life. So these asanas are very important. Sarvangasana, Shirshasana, you can stay up to 20mins at a time. Don’t do do it here, we need to give chance to everyone to practice. (chuckles). Like weekly two times. Whenever you have time, you try to do it longer. Sarvangasana, Shirshasana, and Padmasana.

BALANCING EVERYTHING

Don’t do spinal adjustments or traction during back bends. Many students are doing like that. Doing back bends and then standing and doing like this after doing three back bendings. Don’t do like that. Because you’re body is going in one direction. One direction if your back is going, you complete that one. And then in the end you do the forward bend. In between, don’t disturb that, the direction where you are going. I know many of you, you don’t just come here, you go to other place. You go to Teacher Training, someone is explaining you handstand, someone is explaining you back bending. So like this, many people give many information. That is how you break your back. The unfortunate thing is, when you come here you get the pain. Because before that, what you have done? But before coming here ‘I go to Mysore, I need preparation.’ So you go to this guy’s workshop, you do back bending, you do handstand workshop. Some old Guruji’s students they do ekam, dve, trini they go to handstand. So beginner thinks he should do like that. And he tries to do and he’ll break his shoulder. This is all because they are good at handstand only. They’re not good in any other asana. That is why they want to show handstand. Do Kapotasana they can’t. Because they’re whole life they’ve been doing handstand in every asana, they didn’t concentrate on doing Kapotasana. Because if you do too much handstand, your shoulders get so tight, you can’t do Kapotasana. I’ve seen different bodies, not one or two. I don’t know, maybe more than a million bodies. I started adjusting students 25years back. Even Guruji’s senior students I told them, don’t do this. Because I did my own research. I used to practice three-four hours. I tried to research because I wanted to know, I wanted to learn how to teach. You should balance your everything. You should balance your back bending, you should balance your strength. Everything is very important. It so nicely designed these Series. First you do Primary Series, you stretch your hamstring, it strengthens, it brings more flexibility in your arms and shoulders, it’s so nicely designed. Then you come to back bending. So like that, it’s already been put into the correct. In the olden days, some senior he used to teach Utthita Hasta then he used to go to this one (mimics pulling his imaginary leg with both hands towards his head), Supta Trivikramasana. Trivikramasana, all doing. One after the other. Because they are very good at that only. But in series, only Utthita Hasta Padangushthasana you have to do. You’re not ready to do all those things, splitting. You can do whatever you want. That is how you break your body. Because you are not bringing strength to your body. The body will change. You should allow that to change. So that is why when you’re following this one system, don’t get influenced.

JUMP THROUGHS

Both jump throughs are correct. Jumping is very important. Without touching. Some have short legs, they’ll jump straight. Some have long legs, they’ll cross.

TO SPEAK OR NOT TO SPEAK

Sometimes not speaking is very good. Many Sannyasis, Sadhus they went in silence, they never used to talk to anyone. Still ow I know some real Yogis, some Sannyasis I know, they don’t talk for couple of months. Talking is just to communicate to others that’s all. But in silence also you can relish many good things. Sometimes taking is entertaining for yourself to others. How much talk you need? You have to rest everything. Nothing is humiliating, how you want…sometimes silence is very important. You have to go to the Nature, just sit. Experience the Nature. Be in Silence. The animals are more happy because they don’t have to talk. Sometimes you talk something, you hurt so many people.

DIABETES DOCTOR

Jangalika means man who removes the poison. We are all caught up in Samsara. You’re attention is connected to one to another to another to another. For you Samsara is ‘Oh, I shouldn’t socialize, I shouldn’t talk to anyone, I shouldn’t do that.’ Samsara means how we get caught up in so many things. Samsara means Delusion. Who can remove? The Jangalika. Your Guru is the Jangalika. The one who removes the poison form the snake is called the Jangalika. So like that, your Guru, he removes all the the obstacles, all the Delusion within you. So he’s like a Doctor. The Jungle Doctor is the man who goes into the Jungle, catches the snake and removes the poison from the snake. Just like your Guru, he’s the Jangalika who removes the poison out of you. At least he will try. Sometimes it’s very difficult. (chuckles) There was one Indian student, he used to go in the Old Shala. Everyday he used to ask same question ‘Sir, this Diabetes will go if I do Asana Practice?’ Guruji said ‘Yes it will go.’ After a few days again ‘Sir this Diabetes will go?’ ‘Yes it will go. I’m telling you. Do!’ It was a disease for him everyday asking. After, Guruji used to go inside to have coffee so he would ask ME ‘You think his Dia…’ I said ‘YES It will go!’ (laughter in the hall)
One day Guruji said ‘Guru will never forget the Knowledge, but some Shishya, some Student, will never understand. No matter how many times you tell them!’ (laughter)

IT’S A LONG PROCESS

For students who have injuries and are afraid to practice, ask them to drink Mysore Coffee. All the fear will go. 😛 Being the Teacher, you should give Confidence to your students. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE. When you overdo it then only you get injuries. That is one thing. And our previous Karma. It’s part of our Karma also. What we have done before starting Yoga. If you used to do hiking or cycling or doing other sport. Your body becomes so stiff. When you do Yoga then you will realize. So those stiffness sometimes you have to go through body pain when your body goes through changes. It’s not like I didn’t get any pain. I’ve gone through lots of pain in my practice. My challenge was lifting so many students and keeping my practice! That was even harder. I was only five six. But there were some students who were six five! (laughter) I had to lift them because I wanted to help my Grandfather. He was lifting so many students so I wanted to help him also. So my challenge was how to keep up my practice and help the students. It was a very challenge for me. It seems Sharath is Guruji’s Grandson that’s why everything came so easily. NO. I’ve done the hard work to know this system, to help my Grandfather, to do my own Practice. It’s not easy. Everyday waking up 12:30am. Before I used to get up at 2am, get up, take bath, go to Lakshmipuram, for 3-3 and a half hours, 4 hours, and then again teach. Many students used to come, help my Grandfather. It is not that easy. Helping my Grandfather, by the time in the afternoon, I was so tired. Yoga will loosen everything, it loosens your muscles, it makes your body very flexible. Remember, whatever sport you do, running, jogging, it will make your body very stiff. Suddenly if you try to do stretch, then you’ll tear your hamstring. When your knees are not very flexible, if you try to push too much, do it in the morning, in the evening, again in the morning, if you push yourself to get just one posture then you will hurt yourself. So process has to go, slowly, slowly, slowly, body has to change. You have to build up strength, it’s different kind of strength. There are many big people with big arms. But they can’t do what we can do. So YOU HAVE TO ALLOW. YOU SHOULDN’T HURRY YOURSELF. That’s why Yoga Sutras also says Sa Tu Dīrga Kāla, long time, long process. IT’S A LONG PROCESS. It is like making Masala Dosa. Dosa is like a process. You have to put all the lentils, you have to grind it, it takes like three days process. Then you’ll get the delicious Dosa. There is instant Dosa also but it doesn’t taste well 🙊 When you have injury, work on that injury by doing just simple asanas, cutting your practice down. Sometimes what happens is, just to impress you, the Teacher will give you many asanas. Then you go home and do and break your body. Because you’re not ready to do those postures.

NO PITTA IN ASHTANGA

There’s nothing Pitta, Vata, Kapha…Everything Asana will take care of it. Why you have to worry? (if you are Pitta). You go to Ayurvedic Doctor, too much Pitta, don’t do this, don’t do that. I’ve never been to Ayurvedic Doctor. Not even once I my life I had a Panća Karma. What do you say for that? (laughter) no one has done how many asanas I have done. There was one Doctor. One patient will go ‘I have hand pain’. He says ‘Remove your clothes, lay inside, I’ll come.’ Another patient comes ‘I have ankle pain.’ He says ‘Remove your clothes, lay inside, I’ll come.’ So there’ll be a few patients laying on the bed, waiting for the Doctor to come to check them. They’ll be talking to each other, they’ll say ‘What you have?’ He’ll say ‘Hand pain, the Doctor said remove your clothes, lay down. What you have?’ ‘I have ankle pain, the Doctor said remove your clothes, lay down.’ And there’ll be a poor guy, he’ll be under the bed, he’ll be hiding. They’d say ‘What happened to you?’ ‘I’m a Postman, I came to deliver post, Doctor said remove your clothes and lay down.’ (laughter in the hall) When you’r practicing Asanas, you don’t need anything. Asana will take care of everything. But you have to do it properly. You have to follow your Guru. Then the Asana will go properly according to that. I know when you do Asana you generate a lot of heat, then you have to take oil bath weekly, once. One day you have to rest your body. One day you shouldn’t do anything. That’s why we give you rest day because you do so much whole six days you are working. So that day take care of yourself. Put some oil, take hot shower, relax, don’t do anything one day. So next week will be very fresh. Only when you have really very bad problem, then you have to cleanse everything. Otherwise, usually, you don’t need anything. If you have proper diet, and if you are conscious what you are eating, and how much you are sleeping, how much you are working, all these things are very important. If you don’t do it properly, your Yoga won’t survive. How much you eat, how much you sleep, how much you work…when you eat food, that is also very important. Everyday if you’re having breakfast around 8:30-9am, keep that. Timings are very important. Having lunch at a time, dinner is not recommended. Just one chapati or one piece of bread or something like that because you get up early. That is also very important in your Yoga practice, then you won’t have any problem. How much you sleep, that is also very important. Six seven hours sleep. You can’t go late night 1am go to sleep and get up early and practice, it’s not possible. You have to go to bed early, get up early. You can’t three Thalis! You body can’t digest. What happens? Then you get sick. You get ālasya, you get sleepy if you eat too much. So all these things you have to follow.

OIL BATHS

Oil bath is very good for pregnant women. Very very good, everyday. Castor Oil or Sesame Oil. Usually we have oil bath in Castor Oil. But you have to have proper powder to remove it, otherwise, it will stay. You have to use soap nut powder and arapu powder. Two different, one brown color, one green color. You have to mix both, half half kg the powder, mix it properly then keep it in a vessel. Whenever you want, take it in a bowl, two or three spoons, and make it as a paste. Only that will remove castor oil. Otherwise, it’s very difficult to remove. But when you take castor il, be careful. You can’t stay for too long. If you’re not used to castor oil then you’ll catch cold. But everyday using coconut oil is very important. Every three days, put coconut oil on your head, to your hair so whatever excess heat is there, it will absorb all the heat. It cools down your body. But even for some students they are very stiff, I tell them warm the coconut oil then put it to your joints. That will help you, it will become more flexible. The more oil you use, it’s good. Just rub like this, don’t do massage. It’s very good.

I KNOW IS THE FULL STOP

I never thought about this. I don’t know where you get all these things. Whoever wants to learn Yoga, who feels like studying with me, they are welcome. I never say ‘You come, You don’t come.’ I never advertise. I never say only this section should come here. Have I said ever? If you feel like you want to study with me, you come and practice. But only when I feel I should authorize you then I’ll authorize you. (smiles and chuckles) I know only here. I don’t know what happens outside. I never gossip, I don’t go and see. I’m not in Facebook, I’m not in Twitter, I’m not in anything. I don’t go check what and talk. Even before, I never used to discuss any asanas before with any other students. If there were senior students, I never used to go and ask them. I never did like that. I never said only this section should come. I want serious students to come. Who wants to learn Yoga, they should come here. You can’t just come here just to time pass. I want serious student who really wants to learn Yoga. If they want to teach, that is Secondary. First they should have interest in Learning, that’s all. Some students they come they say ‘I Know. I Know Everything.’ These students I try to avoid, that’s all. (laughter) If you know everything, why should you come here? Just to get authorized? I KNOW IS THE FULL STOP! I Know is the full stop of the sentence. Finished. THEN THERE IS NO LEARNING, THERE IS NO SEEKING AFTER. I Don’t Know. I’m not put Full Stop still, after 25years. That means there is still Learning for me. IF I SAY I KOW EVERYTHING, THEN THAT IS THE END OF MY JOURNEY, FINISHED. So, until last Breath, that Full Stop won’t be there. Life is full of Learning, Learning, Learning.

THE BLACK FRIDAY SALE MADNESS AT THE GATE

You think for yourself. Everybody is eager to get enlightened. They think by pushing someone else they will get enlightened. When you go to some Temples in India, they all push you, push you, push you, they all want to see the God first. God says ‘What is this Nonsense? Why are they pushing each other like this? I’m here! Why pushing?’ Each one of you should think. How should I enter the Shala? How should I behave here in the Shala? That is also very important in your Sadhana. Making someone fall and you go ahead, that is not Sadhana. Again, you are not following Yama and Niyamas. Calm yourself. Wait. Let everyone push, let them fall after. Then you stand behind. You come last. If there is no spot, I’ll open my office for you.

RESPECT THIS CULTURE = PRACTICE = LINEAGE

Again, please don’t wear your beach clothes. You are not in Goa. So try to cover yourself. In the street also. I am telling you, you are in a different culture. Many people they don’t understand. They come from Los Angeles Beach or Miami Beach. They all want to think they are somewhere. Here, please respect the culture. Our culture is totally different. We all wear lots of clothes. If you go without clothes they’ll think you are crazy. You are coming to a different country, different culture, you have to respect the culture. So that is part of Yoga also. In your country is different, here it’s different. So try to put a shawl or cover yourself. It is giving respect to this Practice also. To this Practice, this Culture, this Lineage. Because everyone will ask you why you are here, what you are doing. You are doing Yoga and you are wearing clothes like this. It’s unacceptable. You’r not in Goa, in the Beach. Ok, you think. Thank you very much.”

“Many of you are new faces, many of you have come for the first time to Mysore…

imaḿ vivasvate yogaḿ proktavān aham avyayam
vivasvān manave prāha manur ikṣvākave’bravīt
evaḿ paramparā-prāptam imaḿ rājarṣayo viduḥ
sa kāleneha mahatā yogo naṣṭaḥ parantapa
(Bhagavad-Gītā 4.1-2)

…in Bhagavad-Gītā it says, this Yoga is not new. Yoga has been there for millions and millions of years. All the rishis and the saints, the sadhus and sannyasis have been practicing Yoga for millions of years. Why they are practicing? To gain Higher Consciousness. We are all conscious but our consciousness is very low, we know just to handle this world, how to survive, how we have to behave, we are programmed. If you want to buy a toothpaste, you go to Loyal World, pay money, you know how. But what is this Higher Consciousness? This Higher Consciousness takes us towards the Divine; to understand this Life, understand what is Spirituality and how to get connected to the Divine. This is Higher Consciousness…once you get connected to the Divine…that is Spirituality. Yama and Niyamas, how many of you are following that? Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya, Bramacharya, Aparigaha, Shaucha, Santosha, Taps, Svadhyaya, Ishvara Pranidhana. We all know, it is there in the text book…but how many of you…how many of us, I will include me also, practice? We don’t follow it. Once we get Higher Consiousness, automatically that will come within us; what Spirituality is, not just going to the Temple, sitting there, after you come and do bad things. That is not Spirituality. Spirituality means the Transformation which happens within us; we get sensitive to many things once we get the Knowledge within us. Bhagavad-Gītā says this Yoga has come from generations to many generations; Vivasvan, Manu, like this, one after the other after the other. So it has flown from many many generations. Guru-Shishya Parampara. How this has come? A Teacher and his Disciple. A Master and his Disciple. A Master is who has mastered in this Yoga through Master to his Disciple; a disciple who dedicates himself to his Master, towards his Teaching, being with him, learning with him. Nowadays Yoga has changed, it is not the same Yoga which used to be there, millions of years back. You don’t want to follow a System, you don’t want to follow a Guru. This is very important in our Practice. This is the part of Sadhana. What is part of Sadhana? You devote yourself to one Guru, one Master. And he will transfer everything to you. Many years you devote to your Practice then only you will have better understanding. So as generations passed, in the Bahagavad-Gītā it says ‘yogo naṣṭaḥ parantapa’…as generations passed one after the other after the other, it started becoming diluted. Not many people got interested in knowing Yoga Knowledge. Because it needs lots of Sadhana, lots of Devotion, lots of Dedication, lots of Determination. Lots of D’s are involved in the Sadhana. So when generations passed, people started forgetting about Yoga. ‘I’m going to teach you Yoga.’ That’s what Sri Krishna says to his disciple Arjuna in the Mahābhārata. It’s a very big epic, and in that comes the Bahagavad-Gītā, which has lots of Yogic and Moral Knowledge. In the Yoga Sutras it says, Ashtanga Yoga is the Yoga. Ashtanga Yoga is very important, why it is important? It talks about Yama, Niyama, Ahimsa, Asteya, Bramacharya…it covers all these things.

yoga-aṅga-anuṣṭhānād-aśuddhi-kṣaye jñāna-dīptir-āviveka-khyāteḥ (YS 2.28)

So how does this Yoga happen? It’s a process. It should Happen. It’s not like a pain killer. When you have pain, you go buy and take the pain killer, the pain will go away. For Enlightenment, there is no tablet, there is no syrup, there is no medicine! Your Sadhana is the only medicine!…the only way you will reach Enlightenment. Nowadays you get a certificate, you think you’re enlightened? You’re wasting money for nothing. Everything is instant now. Nobody wants to do Sadhana. Passing by Mysore to just practice for one month with Sharath or stretch your body because it feels good, like that Enlightenment doesn’t happen. You come for one month you think you like to do this, you like to do that, you’re thinking one month you will finish. One month in Mysore and you want to do everything. You will ruin your whole Sadhana. You will not do anything properly. There was a barber, he had so many clients. He had to cut so many hair. So what he did? He cut little bit hair of this guy, little bit of this guy, little bit of that guy. After he sees, nobody is fully cut! Everyone is half-shaved! (laughter). He had to shave all of these people’s head, but he didn’t have patience. He didn’t concentrate on each person. He shaved little bit of everyone’s hair. So Sadhana is like that. You do Asana here, you do Pranayama there…it’s like Masala Dosa. You go to Durga and think you like to try this one, you like to try set dosa, you like to try plain dosa, all Dosas you’ll try. You won’t relish any of those dosas! If you want to relish Masala Dosa, you should eat only Masala Dosa! (laughter and relating) it’s like when you go to these big super malls and you go to the Perfume section. When you enter, one lady will come and sprays on you. You smell and it’s good first time. You go a little forward and another lady comes. Your whole body is full of all of these different perfumes. You go from here and by the time you exit there, the whole body is smelling badly! (laughter) You can’t enjoy one perfume. So like this, in Yoga, you should also follow one System. This Ashtanga System is so beautiful! Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi…how beautifully it has been arranged. Yoga-aṅga-anuṣṭhānād-aśuddhi-kṣaye. Yoga Anya. Which are the Yoga angas? These eight. By practicing these eight limbs, step by step, stage by stage, aśuddhi-kṣaye. First, aśuddhi is the impurities that we have to get rid of, impurities of the body, impurities of the mind. Without getting rid of these two, how can someone think about Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi? It doesn’t happen if you’re mind is filled up with a lot of delusions inside. The eight limbs of Patanjali Yoga Sutra has been divided. First four limbs are external exercise. Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama. These are the foundations to build Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi. These four (the latter) you won’t have to do, it will happen automatically, only when your foundations are correct. Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama are the fundamental limbs. Once you correct them, then automatically Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi will happen. Aśhuddhi-kṣaye, by practicing this, once we get rid of all the impurities in the body…what are the impurities in the body? Some people are sick, some people doesn’t have strength, some people are out of focus. So this Asana is a Sadhana which will bring good health, bring more stamina, bring stability in you, you’ll be more focused. Of course, it depends how you do it. If you to the gym and you want to practice Yoga only as a workout then it will not give you the benefits. But if you incorporate the breathing, the focus, the Tristhana we say, with the breathing and the gazing, then it becomes focused practice. Now when you practice, where is your focus? Your focus is somewhere else. When you bring focus within you everyday, you become so focused in your practice, that becomes a Meditative Practice. Meditating is focusing, that’s all. Dhyana is different. Withdrawing all the sense organs is Dhyana, a very very high level of Yoga. Focusing is Meditation. So, to focus in one place, bring oneness within you, that is very important in our practice. Once we develop that slowly, slowly, you will become stronger in your practice, stronger in your focus, bring you closer to the higher levels of Yoga. We get many understanding within us, we get more clarity within us once we practice Asanas through breathing. Then the aśhuddhi, all the impurities, of the body and the mind will be removed. First Asana is very important, why? To get better understanding of Yama-Niyama. Once you start doing Asana, all these breathing techniques, then you get better understanding, there is clarity. If you come here to study and then I tell you, okay, practice Yama-Niyama. Is that possible? No. First you have to get clarity within you, better understanding within you. That happens through your practice, then your mind will start thinking towards Yama-Niyamas. Only when the impurities of your mind is gone., then only Yama-Niyamas will follow. Aśuddhi-kṣaye jñāna-dīptir. Then once we get rid of all these impurities, then Jñāna, the Real, True, Spiritual Knowledge, we’ll be able to understand. Jñāna-dīptir-āviveka-khyāteḥ. Then you will become wiser in your Spiritual Practice. So these are the benefits of doing Ashtanga Yoga. But then, in Yoga Sutras it doesn’t say Vinyasa, doesn’t say Paschimattanasana, Purvattanasana. Then you have to refer other books. As I said, this Knowledge comes from Guru-Shishya Parampara. This knowledge doesn’t come by reading books. This knowledge only comes by spending time with your Guru. That Master will teach you all these techniques. Anyone can read Yoga Sutras, there are lots of translations in English. Control your mind, but how? How to control your mind? By reading you can control your mind? It’s not possible. It’s not controlling the mind. It’s calming the mind. Your mind is like monkey. Mind jumps here, there like a monkey. Make it as a koala bear. It’s very calm. If you leave monkey for five minutes, it will jump fifteen branches here and there. Our mind is also like that. My Father always used to say ‘Idle mind is Devil’s Workshop.’ The mind if you leave for five minutes, it starts thinking so many things. It’s like a Devil’s Workshop, ‘I want this, I want that.’ So how to calm this mind? How to bring this focus? Practice the Vinyasa Krama, what you do. It’s got so much breathing techniques involved in that, that inhalation, that exhalation with the postures. So there are three things happening. Pranayama is happening, Asana is happening, and Gazing; Focus, Meditation is also happening in the Practice. Pranayama means what? To extend the Prana, that is what you are doing. You’re extending the Prana, inhalation, exhalation. You’re expanding the Prana in each Asana. So you’re doing Pranayama. And Focusing is Meditation. So you’re doing all these things in your Practice. You don’t have to spend so much money learning Pranayama somewhere. So this Knowledge has come from so many generations, it is not new. As we know, it goes up to Rama Mohan Bramachari, Krishnamacharya, then Pattabhi Jois, then to me, then to you. So it has come like this, the Parampara, it has come.

I NOW AUTHORIZE THEE

Authorization happens only when you are eligible; once we have confirmed that you are able to transmit, you are able to teach this knowledge properly to others, then you will get authorized. I don’t know you. I do not know what you do in other Shalas. You need to practice here, regularly. If you say you have been practicing Yoga in the beach for many years, how would I know if you’ve been practicing properly or not? I’m staying here. Practice in front of me. I have to understand the student. I have to know that he knows something. If you are practicing, I don’t have Divya Drishti. Divya Dhristi is, I can be here, I can see the whole world. I need to see, I have only two eyes.

CROSS-EYED

More practice for nose Drishti. It’s one advantage for long noses, if you have small nose…(fade out, laughter) Just practice. As I told you, you have to be more focused in your own practice. Once you do all these breathing technique and gazing in your practice, you will also get used to this. Put a red dot here (points to the tip of nose; laughter everywhere), you practice like that. But don’t put it and come to the Shala.

STRUNG

The string we wear is called Brahmin String. Once you become a Brahmin. It’s a great ceremony which Father will teach you the Gāyatrī Mantra. He will teach you all of the Brahmin rituals, and that is when you get that string. To perform all of those rituals you have to have that string, otherwise, you can’t do anything, according to Indian, especially Brahmin Tradition.

YOGA FOR EVERYONE JUST NOT…

An 80year old woman who has knee injury can do Surya Namaskara and some Asanas. She can’t do Eka Pada (smiles). Eighteen years back, my Grandmother had just passed away and we all moved to this opposite house (points to the house across the Shala). So Guruji came from Lakshmipuram and he was living here. So everyday, my Grandfather and me, we used to go to Lakshmipuram, in the early morning at four o’clock, and again in the evening we used to go. One day in the evening we went there, at four o’clock in the evening and we saw there was one man and a lady sitting outside Lakshmipuram Shala, on the small concrete bench. As soon as he saw Guruji, he was 86years old, and the lady was his daughter, she was 65years…he said ‘I want to practice Yoga.’ He was 86years, he’s older than Guruji! So he came. Doctor said he has Hernia and he had to go through an operation. But he said he would not get any operation and he would learn Yoga from Pattabhi Jois. So he came. Three months he did Yoga. 86year old man. So anyone can practice Yoga. Who can practice? Young man can practice. Young woman can practice. Old people also can practice. Very old they can also practice. Only one cannot practice, who is that? (everyone answers in unison) LAZY. Lazy (Sharathji nods with a smile). If I give 4:30am time to someone, they say ‘Oh I have to get up really early. I don’t want to come at 4:30am. Can you change my time?’ But I’m not sleeping to teach you. Everyday three hours, four hours I’m sleeping. Because I have to prepare for morning class, previous day. Have my dinner at five o’clock. I have to do my own practice 12:30am.

START THEM YOUNG

Children can start Ashtanga Yoga 10-12yrs. You have to understand Vinyasa, all these breathing techniques. That’s why at least you have to be 10-12yrs. Then you can understand when to inhale where to exhale. Before that, if someone just wants to play with Asana, don’t stop them. I started when I was 6-7yrs. I was doing all the Asanas, my Grandfather never stopped me.

24 HOURS

Someone asked me a question, When do You practice Yoga? I answered ’24 Hours!’ What is this 24hours? 24hours of Yoga! Asana Practice for 3hours, Yoga Practice for 24hours. That means to think about what is Yoga. Yoga is not limited to Asanas. Asana is a tool to bring stability and strength to your body and mind. Your real Sadhana is beyond Asana Practice. Asana is very important tool, that is the Foundation, but that is not the Ultimate Goal of Yoga. This Foundation is very important. It’s like a vehicle, it reaches you to one destination. This vehicle will take you there. But for you to research, to go beyond that, again you have to have proper understanding of Yoga. So Asana is very important daily Practice, then to think about what Yoga is, how to follow Yama-Niyamas, how to bring Oneness within us, this is also part of Sadhana. You can do Japa. Japa also brings good energy within you.

Taj-japaḥ tad-artha-bhāvanam (YG1.28)

Once you do Japa, repeating the same mantra many many times, continuously saying, that brings positive energy within you. Again, once you do Asanas, your mind gets so focused, you’re breathing, lots of concentration, you bring so much stamina, you bring stability. So once you do this Japa, at that time, it becomes more stronger. Already through Asanas you’re generating Positive Energy within you. Asanas is not just bending your body. Through this breathing technique, through that focus, you generate positive energy within you. So once we get rid of all these delusions we have, then you get positive energy within you. So everyday, read books. Don’t waste time at coconut stand simply gossiping about something. You read Bhagavd-Gītā, Hatha Yoga Pradīpikā, you can read many books. You can read Upanishads. Before reading Patanajali Yoga Sutra, you go through Bhagavad-Gītā first. It takes one year for you to read and understand. There’s lots of good things there. Gīta-sugītā. It means Gītā comes directly from the Divine. Krishna is Everything.

KRIYA YOGA

tapaḥ svādhyāy-eśvarapraṇidhānāni kriyā-yogaḥ (YG2.1)

Kriya means action. Tapas, Svadhyaya, Ishvara Pranidhana, once you practice these three things, it becomes Kriya Yoga.

ONE SYSTEM, MT. EVEREST

You want to study Pranayama somewhere? If you are studying with me, see the application in the back. Terms and Conditions. You’re not supposed to practice Asana or Pranayama or Meditation with someone else. See, you’re following One System. Once you’re following One System you should follow That. As I told you, you should have one food. The food will be tasty. If you’re walking on the street, many pele will offer you many food. If you taste this, taste that, you will get stomach upset, throwing up all night. This System also, always my Grandfather used to say, when you have two Teachers, if you’re not following one system, you’re following two systems, one shishya, one student will die. When your fundamental itself is not correct, what’s the use of sitting there and doing Pranayama? Once you follow One system, you should follow That System. You are doing Pranayama here itself.

Prānāyāmena yuktena sarva-roga-kṣayo bhavet
ayuktābhyāsa-yogena sarva-roga-samudgamaḥ
(Hatha Yoga Pradīpikā 2.16)

The Shastras say that by doing Pranayama, you can get rid of many diseases but if you don’t do it properly, you will invite unwanted diseases. First lungs have to be strong, nervous system has to be strong. Your nervous system has to be perfect. First you have to bring stability to your body and mind, nervous system, then your lungs should be ready to hold and withstand Pranayama. That is why this breathing technique, this Vinyasa is very important to strengthen your nervous system, to straighten your lungs, to bring stability within you, to bring more focus within you. Then, Pranayama is possible. When you do that, then you’re ready for Pranayama. First you have to be ready. If someone asked me to climb Mt. Everest, I will if I go just climb. First I have to climb many small hills with preparation for five years. One and a half year practice combing Chamundi Hill. Then I have to go little taller, practice trekking. Then little bigger. Then I have to go to a mountain where there is snow, so that I get used to it. Then after five, six years of doing these things, then I can go to Himalayas to go to Mt. Everest, because I will be prepared with all my preparations. If I just climbed, I can’t even go to the base camp. So preparation is important. You should have patience, that’s all.

THE PILLARS OF SPIRITUAL BUILDING

Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi will come later. First you have to be stable. Yama-Niyama-Asana-Pranayama is what we are doing now. Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi will automatically happen. You have to nourish…when you want to grow a Rose Plant, what you do? You don’t grow the plant and pull it up. It doesn’t come like that. You have to nourish the roots. You have to put proper fertilizer, proper water, then the Rose will come. Asana is also like that, the Yoga Practice is also like that. First you have to nourish the roots. Once you have the strong roots, the plant will grow, the tree will grow, strongly. Then the flower or the fruit will come. If the roots are not strong enough, the tree will fall.

Vyādhi styāna saṁśaya pramāda-ālasya-avirati bhrāntidarśana-alabdha-bhūmikatva-anavasthitatvāni citta-vikṣepāḥ te antarāyāḥ (YS 1.30)

Alabdha-bhūmikatva…once you’re grounded properly, in your Spiritual Practice, the grounding is very important… the ground is not correct, you can’t build a Spiritual building. If you want to build a Spiritual building, first the Foundation should be proper. If the Foundation is not proper, the tall building which you have will fall. Once the four pillars are strong, then you can build your building, reach Higher Consciousness. If your ground is not strong, what Higher Consciousness can you think of? If you’re disturbed by many things, disturbed mind cannot think of Higher Consciousness or Enlightenment.

BOOKS VS. SADHANA

After reading Bhagavad-Gītā and Yoga Sutras, Practice! There are many books that talk about Yoga. Yoga Sutra says, Upanishads says about Yoga, Samhita says about Yoga, there’s many many books. But books are just to refer. The Sadhana is Practical. If you want to be academic then just read books. There are many scholars in Mysore who have read Yoga Sutras but there is no Internal Sadhana, they don’t have their own personal Sadhana. Whatever book knowledge is there, they will tell you ‘Control the Mind.’ Can you control the mind? Stop Chitta Vritti. Stop the mind. Can you stop your mind? You can’t even take one step if you stop your mind. What does that mean? To bring calmness to your mind. To bring the whatever delusions we have, whatever disturbance we have, to stop That disturbance. To stop That delusions, is called as Chitta Vritti Nirodhāh. Our own Sadhana is very important. Without that, Yoga is very difficult to understand.

sharatfeb7

*At this point, Sharathji returns a lost and found purse with identifications cards. Sambhav, his son, walks in. Someone asks Sharaji how old Sambhav is. Sharathji answers ‘Seven Years.’ Sambhav claims eight. ‘He turns eight years this September.’ He looks at his son and says ‘Only if you do Padmasam can you be eight years.’ Sambhav hurriedly comes down from his Father’s lap and galantly demonstrates everyone his Jois version of Padmasana, complete with Eyes closed with REM, nostril flaring in his Ujjayi breathing, and his childlike Mudra with one pointing finger clipping over a thumb. It was a sight to behold, seeing the pride in both Sharathji’s eyes and Sambhav’s display of what the Future has in store for everyone. While this is happening though, and everyone has taken their camera’s out taking Sambhav’s photo, Sharathji was correcting his son ‘Straight Back!’ Sambhav comes out of it, stand up, stretches his arms and cracks his uncles through interlaced fingers. Sigh…

LOST IN TRANSLATION

In reading the texts, Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad-Gītā, commentary is very important. That is how you get understanding. Who has done the commentary, that is very important.

THE GIFT OF MANTRA

When you find your Guru, you can ask him to give you your Mantra. Until then, keep it empty.

TIME TO DO SHIRSHASANA

“Last week I told you about how important Primary Series is, so many good Asanas to cure many diseases. And the finishing postures, what are those? Sarvangasana, Halasana, Karanpidasana, Pindasana, Urdhva Padmasana, Matsyasana, Uttanasana Padasana, those Asanas are very important. For what? To store Amrita Bindu, allow the blood to circulate properly and to purify the nervous system and blood. These are very important postures in your practice. But I have been watching and many of you have not been doing Shirshasana properly. Today I thought I will show you how to do properly. When you do Shirshasana, your hand should be like tripod. When you do Photography, you can’t lift big lens, so you use a tripod. The elbows and hands should be in proper position like a tripod. Then you will be able to balance properly.”

(He sets up and starts showing and explaining the proper way of doing Shirshasana)…

“When you do Shirshasana, if you have difficulty doing it, you should have some assistance. A Teacher should teach you how to do the Sarvangasana and Shirshasana. Without guidance from your Teacher, never do Shirshasana, even Sarvangasana. These things are very important. And when you don’t have too much time, you only have time to do half of Primary Series, then do half of Primary Series and do these finishing postures. One day you have only fifteen minutes, you don’t have time at all, just do Surya Namaskara and the finishing postures, these are very important pastures in your practice. And when you have time, you can stay longer in Sarvangasana and Shirshasana for twenty minutes, half an hour. But you should build up slowly, don’t do at once. You’re not used to it you might get dizzy, then there’s lack of oxygen, lack of circulation in the body. So slowly you have to build up. One day you do for five minutes, next day add on. Don’t do it here, the Shala is so full and everybody is waiting. When you go home, when you go back to your country, when you have more time, at least one day in a week, try to do five minutes, ten minutes, fifteen minutes, try to stay in Shirshasana and try to relax there so that you build up strength, stamina, everything will come. Many diseases can be cured by Shirshasana. Some people they can’t breathe properly, they have respiratory problems, there’s not enough oxygen coming through blood. They go dizzy sometimes, they get headache, too much anxiety. All these problems can be cured with Shirshasana. You can’t do it anytime during the day. It has to be early morning or in the evening. Brahma Muhūrta (God’s Hour; one hour and a half before Sunrise) is very important. Early morning you all have time. You have time in front of computer, you have time for Twitter, WhatsApp you can do all those things. I think you definitely have time. NOBODY HAS TIME. YOU HAVE TO MAKE TIME. So early morning is recommended. You cannot do it during the day. Brahman Muhūrta, early morning, is the best time to practice Yoga. Why early morning? Because the whole society is sleeping. Automatically, half of your practice is done, it becomes very calm. Everything is silent. Everybody is sleeping. And the air, what we get…later in the day the pollution starts, all the vehicles will start moving. If you see, in the early mornings, your mind is also very fresh. Problem starts when you meet people, when you travel, all these things happen in the day, then mind also doesn’t stay. It keeps wandering here and there, see so many things, you interact with so many people. The concentration won’t be there to practice. So it is very important to do practice early morning.

THE HEAT IS ON

If you have temperature, don’t do Asana practice. Take rest. Because already when we practice we generate so much internal heat, so you get more tired. When you have temperature, you never practice. You just lie down and rest. But sometimes you get Yogic Fever or Asana Fever. Asana fever, head ache, diarrhea, you get all these things. This is all cleansing. Sometimes when a student comes, who has never done Ashtanga Yoga or Asanas, suddenly he gets fever, he gets temperature. That will go in one day. If you have regular fever, then it stays for two or three days. Twenty three years back, my Grandfather made me catch here (knees) in back bending, the whole day I had fever. (Smiles and laughter). Fever is not temperature but you feel so tired, you can’t get up. So like that, many things happen. Sometimes you get diarrhea, especially when you’re dong back bending. Once you do deep back bending, it twists your lower abdomen, it puts lots of pressure there. It’s all cleansing. All the opinion in your body will go, your body becomes more lighter. Then you can practice, it’s not a problem.

GRATITUDE AND RESPECT

Are you practicing Ashtanga Yoga? All Ashtanga Yoga? All the Eight Limbs? You’re practicing Asanas. Sometimes you have to see what kind of injury you have. Sometimes you have torn meniscus then you have to have surgery. Because of what you have done previously, it’s your previous karma, what you have done. Jogging, these things will stiffen your knees, hips, shoulder. Then you come and study Yoga. Because of this stiffness, you push yourself too hard. So once you’re doing this, you should stop doing everything else you are doing, like bicycling, running, jogging, even waking too long. It’s not good, it makes your body very stiff. But here in Asanas, everything becomes flexible. So first you have to see what kind of injury you have. According to that, you do it slowly. Get it fixed first, let it heal for three months, then practice. Asana is so attractive, we get so excited by seeing Asanas. ‘I want to do this, I want to do that.’ There’s no control. You’re body is ready to do that or not. It won’t think all these things. You just want to do, and you break your body. That’s why it’s very important to understand. When someone ask me to climb Mt. Everest I won’t go, because I’m not ready to climb. It needs preparation. Many years of preparation. That I know. I’m intelligent enough to know that. I’m clever enough. So that is why you should understand how to do when it’s time. Many times I’ve said, strong Foundation, strong Practice. The Spiritual Practice within You, it has to be a slow process. QUICK COMING WILL QUCKLY GO. If you do it for long time…it should happen when it should happen. You should give time for everything. Slowly, slowly when you get more understanding, when your body changes, when you get more knowledge about your body, knowledge about the Spirituality, knowledge about this whole practice system…it takes time…then you will have the proper Foundation. Proper Foundation is very important. Without proper foundation, you can’t build a strong building. While practicing, the Practice should be for many years. Nowadays, many people have spoiled Yoga, certifications, workshops, Teacher Trainings. It’s no use. Only your Practice will stay for long time. Again, for what purpose you are doing Yoga? You’re doing for Spiritual Practice or just to get a Certificate? It’s your choice. If you want a Certificate, it will never make you understand what Yoga is. Yoga you should give Time. Yoga Practitioner doesn’t have an agenda. His agenda is only to learn the System, experience it. When we stated, I didn’t want a certificate. Because I wanted to relish Yoga. I just wanted to practice. IF YOU RELISH THE PRACTICE, AUTOMATICALLY THE YOGA WILL HAPPEN WITHIN YOU. If you say ‘oh I want to get Authorization, Certification, that’s why go to Mysore many times.’ With this kind of an attitude, you will get Authorization yes, but you won’t understand what Yoga is. First you have to understand what Yoga is. That takes TIME. That takes HARD WORK. That takes DEDICATION. That takes DEVOTION. That takes DISCIPLINE. Many D’s are involved in this. DEDICATION, DEVOTION, DETERMINATION. If you bring a 44year old man, he can’t do Shirshasana, like how I showed you. That’s many years of practice. The balance, everything, automatically it comes. Automatically my legs goes in this posture. It’s many years of dedicated practice. Everyday getting up 12 o’clock, now I’m getting up at 12:30am doing my own practice because of you. I have to come here on time 4 o’clock. If I go ‘oh I should go sleep, why should I care about teaching or this practice?’, I can be like that also. But I won’t be. It’s not my thing. I could have been like that. Because I loved Yoga. I loved practicing. I wanted to know what it is. These should come. What is Yoga? How we should live our Life? It will change your practice! So your own practice of Yoga will change once our own perception of this changes. Our sacrifice is only this much. If you. See Krishnamacharya, Pattabhi Jois, what they did to learn this practice, our struggle is nothing. They used to walk many many kilometers to go to school and then to learn Yoga. Guruji was living in Kowshika and there was a small town called Hasan which is 6 kilometers. He used to walk there for school. Someone told him that Krishnamacharya was doing Yoga Asana demonstration in his hometown? In the evening, after school, at six o’clock there was a demo. He came and he saw Krishnamacharya demonstrating with his students. It was very attractive for him. We all step into Yoga through Asanas. Asana is the one which attracts you. Then he liked it very much, he said ‘I want to learn this.’ There was no application then, fill up and send it (laughter). You have to go to the Teacher and ask him ‘Can you please accept me as your student?’ He will ask millions of questions. You should convince him with all of the questions. He asked, who are you, where are you from, who is your Mother and Father, what they do? Because receiving is also very important, you can’t just give it to someone ‘Come, I’ll teach you.’ He should be willing to take that. When giving some knowledge, you can’t just give it to someone. As I told you, if you give this much gold to an ant, it can’t handle that, it’ll be crushed under the gold! If you give a big diamond to monkey, monkey doesn’t know it’s a diamond. Monkey thinks it’s a stone and it starts playing with that stone. So this precious Knowledge, to give also…you should know, who is receiving this Knowledge? Are they ready? Are they capable of handling this? If you give, then it will be a disaster, they will make it into Circus Yoga. It doesn’t become Spirituality, it becomes only Circus; bending body, going in the beach doing handstand, building their body, it becomes like that. And then after there is so much pain, you can’t do back bending here. Because you are doing here and there. No respect…

Sa tu dīrghakāla nairantarya satkāra-ādara-āsevito dṛḍhabhūmiḥ YS 1.14

That is also very important. GRATITUDE TOWARDS THIS PRACTICE. RESPECT TOWARDS THIS PRACTICE. Then only, you’ll have arp per foundation within you. All these things are very important in your practice.

DISCIPLINE = WHAT TO DO?

You all know through practice what kind of man Krishnamacharya was. If you take the Knowledge what he had, I don’t know how many Births you have to take. How much Dedication we should have. Krishnamacharya, he’s the man to bring this Yoga alive, to give Life to this Practice. He’s the one who went and learn for many years. Now see millions and millions of people practicing Yoga. He was strict. He was disciplined. WITHOUT THE DISCIPLINE IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO TEACH YOGA. I have to be strict for you to make you understand or else you’ll take it easy ‘My time is 9 o’clock, oh I’ll go 9:30am. Sharath, he’s very cool.’ I won’t accept you. My Grandfather had Theory class at 12 o’clock everyday. So they had to go to Krishnamacharya’s house in the noon. So if they’re five minutes late, he used to make them stand outside. Until he calls them in, they were supposed to go. Before 12 o’clock they used to just go straight into the house, but if they cross 12 o’clock then they have to wait outside. There were lots of stones, it was very hot, they had to stand on that because they are not supposed to wear foot wears inside anyone’s house in India. You have to remove your footwear, wash your feet, before going inside the house. So they had to stand until Krishnamacharya called them inside. He was very principled man, very disciplined man. I know many of you are disciplined, many people don’t like you. But what to do? YOGA NEEDS DISCIPLINE. YOU SHOULD FOLLOW PRINCIPLES OF YOGA IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT IT IS. I told you, a real Guru is not one who makes you go to sleep. A GURU WAKES YOU UP. He says ‘Get up, it is time to practice, it is time to be attentive to your Practice.’ Otherwise you do Surya Namaskara and you look at your cellphone. Cellphone is good but sometimes it can be annoying. It’s like the diamond giving to the monkey. You don’t know when to use, how to use…when you have to use it, when you shouldn’t use it. My friends they call me, after 8 o’clock my phone is switched off, afternoon it’s switched off, 12n-3pm. ‘Tried to call you, you’re phone is switched off!’ But what to do?

NO FEAR, NO FUN…with Coffee!

Fear in Asana? Fear is good. NO FEAR, NO FUN! Sometimes when you have fear, you concentrate more on your practice. If you don’t have fear, everything comes so easy, then your mind also starts wandering here and there. Fear is good. By practicing more and more, Fear also will go in the Asana. You become more focused in your practice, the Fear will also go, the distractions also will go, everything will go. So always there is Fear. Whenever you get new Asana, the Fear starts. Especially in back bending, dropping back, coming up. So all this Fear, your Tecaher will you ‘Relax more.’ The more you relax in the posture, the Fear will also go. WHAT YOGA DOES IS IT STRENGTHENS YOUR BODY AND IT STRENGTHENS YOUR MIND. When we do lots of Breathing Techniques, when we do Asanas, this whole process will strengthen your body and strengthen your mind. And this is what we want. Some people they do body building, they look so tough, but they are very emotional. I’ve seen some people. They look very tough but they have so much emotion inside. That is why Sthira means stable, strengthening the body and mind. To make your mind stable, so that it doesn’t distract here or there. These two things are very important. That’s why in the Yoga Sutra also it says…

Sthira sukham āsanam YS 2.46

Prayatna śaithilyānanta samāpattibhyām YS 2.47

Tato dvandvānabhighātah YS 2.48

Dvandvā, all these dualities are happening. Sometimes you’re so happy, sometimes you’re depressed. That depressed-ness becomes Fear. It brings so many things. Happiness never brings Fear. Does it bring Fear? But Depression, when you get depressed, when your mind is not stable, it brings more, all these things. So to get rid of this, the Asana is very important. YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH MANY THINGS.

Vyādhi styāna samśaya pramāda ālasya āvirati bhrānti-darśana alabdha-bhūmikatva anavasthitatva citta vikśepa te antarāyāh. YS 1.30

Mind keeps on…there is sickness in the body, sometimes you can’t even move. That is why we do practice, why? To make the body stable, to bring good health to your body. Health is also an obstacle that won’t let you go further in your practice. If you have some other problem, coughing, breathing problem, then how can you concentrate about Yoga? How can you concentrate about Dharana, Dhyana, all these things? It’s impossible. You want to sit quietly, but you have to cough. This is also an obstacle. Laziness…sometimes ‘oh I don’t want to practice, early morning, today I don’t want to practice.’ Then you have to boost yourself. Take half cup of coffee (), that day will be your best practice! (😛) You doubt your practice, what you’re doing is correct or not. Sometimes we have carelessness, we don’t have too much attention to practice. So all these pramāda, all these things…sometimes we get false attraction, false knowledge. When you don’t have strong foundation, even if you practice five years, you can have all these things, lack of concentration, because you’re disturbed with so many other things, then it is difficult to put more, you can’t focus in your practice. When you can’t focus in your practice then that can also give you fear, depression, all these things.

THE SWEET PAIN OF PERFECTION

Practice whatever you have learned here. Not getting too many Asanas….WHATEVER YOU HAVE LEARNED, MASTER THAT, BRING PERFECTION IN THAT. what’s the use of doing 200 Asanas? There’s no Perfection on that. Learn 30 Asanas first, perfect those asanas. Then go to next Asana. How many living beings are there? That many Asanas are there. When you can learn all those Asanas? I have learned 650 Asanas, but if I say I want to learn 5,000 Asanas, it’s not possible. I have to work on this 650 Asanas for this life, this is enough! So whatever you do, DON’T RUN BEHIND ASANAS. ‘Oh I’m ready, I want to do More, More!’ Perfect on your Asanas. IT’S THE PRACTICE. THE BODY WILL CHANGE. When you are dedicated, but limit your practice also. You can’t do the whole day. You do this Asana here, going home doing again, this will hurt your body. So in this practice, bring perfection in the Asanas, what you have learned here. Then next time, you can progress many more. That is how I have learned. It took me 16years to learn. My Grandfather, he didn’t teach me ‘oh, you’re my grandson, I’ll teach you 30 Asanas today!’ He never taught like that. I have to show him Perfection. He was watching everyday ‘oh ok, today you’re ready to learn this Asana.’ And I had to work on that. It build up slowly, slowly. How much pain I have gone through, you can’t even imagine! It’s physical pain but it’s all SWEET PAIN. Once you get sweet pain, no pain no gain eh? (laughter) This one practice in the morning is enough. You’ll need the whole day to relax and to do all this practice.

GURUBHYO NAMAHA

Teacher always tells you when you’re ready but it’s your thing to understand what he is saying. Teacher can’t go and monitor you like the Police, go behind y, see what you’re doing, how many times you’re practicing. If you are not ready for an Asana then you have to stop. Teacher will tell you. If you go to a Teacher that teaches 10 Asanas in one day, then your body is not ready, you can’t handle this. Then you’ll quit, tomorrow you’ll get body pain, then you cannot move. That is why when someone comes to us who has never done Yoga we teach them ONLY Surya Namaskara. He has to perfect in Surya Namaskara before he goes to next posture. So for first week only Surya Namaskara A. After that Surya Namaskara B. How has he understood the Vinyasa? It’s not only body changes, you have to develop stamina, strength, all these things are very important. That only comes when you have understood the Vinyasa, where you have to inhale, where you have to exhale. These are very important tool in the practice. There has to be coordination in the posture and the breathing. You can feel the Energy flowing inside. To perfect in Surya Namaskara also, it takes time. And one thing you have to remember is, OUR WHOLE PRACTICE IS BASED ON THE SURYA NAMASKARA! Chaturanga Dandasana, Urdhvamukha Śvanasana, Adhomukha Śvanasana, everytime we have to do that. So perfection in Surya Namaskara is very important. That doesn’t mean you have to do Surya Namaskara 108 times! You do 8times and 5times when you’re a Beginner, understand the Breathing Technique, where you have to inhale, where you have to exhale. Just perfecting that, then all the standing postures will come one by one. Like that you should keep on building slowly, slowly, slowly. If you go too fast, too many Asanas, you’ll hurt your body. Then you can’t move your body. Everything is not correct. Relaxation is not there. 23years back, my Grandfather taught me a deep back bending Asana, Eka Pada Rajakapotasana. I went deep ‘oh it feels very good! I can go deeper, deeper!’ Then suddenly there was a big tear here in my shoulder. Then 15days I couldn’t lift my hand. The funny story is, I came the next morning, I don’t cry. I’ve cried only 4 or 5 times in my whole Life. Again in the evening I came to help him in the evening class. I was taking to my Grandmother, she was very close to me. Guruji came. He said ‘Sharath tomorrow I have a demonstration in a College.’ I asked ‘oh, who’s dang the Demo?’. He said ‘You!’ This was next day after my injury! I only looked at my Grandmother’s face because I couldn’t tell Guruji. I said, ‘what do I do I can’t even lift my hand.’ He said ‘no no, I’ve already agreed. You have to do it.’ The whole day, whole night I didn’t sleep. The next day we went to College and I just said ‘ok, Gurubhyo Namaha.’ I just surrendered to Guru. And he just started counting, and he counts very fast! You have to keep up! Especially when you’re dong Demo, you never know which Asana is coming next! The only thing I thought is Surrendering. There was no other option at all! So just surrender to your Guru and do it. The Demo came really nice…but…after the Demo…two months even Surya Namsakra was difficult (endearing laughter). I couldn’t even take deep inhalation, it was so painful. It was there for long time. It was here in my shoulder and these two fingers were numb. Two months these were numb. Two months it took long time to heal. But the only thing that helped me was the Practice. Everyday doing Asana, whatever I could. Just ding Primary Series, it allowed the blood to circulate. When we’re not focused in our practice…when we’re young we want more, more, it’s easy to injure ourself. But there is no Tea her like Pattabhi Jois. He’s the Greatest Master. Many Masters are there but he is totally different because he doesn’t have any Ego. And all the students are equal for him. If it is grandson or some other student who came, even a child he used to teach. What he teach to his grandson, same thing he also taught to others also. There was no Ego at all in him. That makes him a very very Great Yoga Master.

THE GREAT YOGA KNOWLEDGE

THE GREAT YOGA KNOWLEDGE IS INSIDE, WITHIN YOU. Don’t search Knowledge, here, there, don’t run around outside. It’s inside you, here (hand on his Heart). As I told you, all the Arishadvargas…Kama, Krodha, Moha, Lobha, Mada, Matsarya. Once we get rid of these things, we will understand the Pure Yoga which is Within You. So Yoga is Within You. You are running behind so many things; workshops, Teacher Trainings, searching for Yoga…externally. But it’s Inside You. First we have to change here (mind), then the Yoga will happen. Then whatever practice we are doing gets a Meaning.

THE ONE AND A HALF HOUR PRACTICE

Breathing, was we do, is also Pranayama. Pranayama means dragging the Prana. It strengthens your mind and it calms your mind also. What is Meditation? Calming the mind is Meditation. Dhyana is totally different, withdrawal of all the senses. There is no external activity. Just camping the mind can Meditation. Withdrawal of the senses is called as Dhyana.making it stronger, to grow it stronger within you becomes Dharana. When that happens, external activity will stop, you won’t be affected by any external activity. Everything becomes internal, you become so focused within you, that whatever nonsense is happening around outside won’t disturb you. That is Dhyana. When you go to Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi, nothing will affect you. No disturbances will happen, because you have withdrawn everything. Why you are so affected? Because all your senses are working outside now. Inwardly when we withdraw our senses and try to focus within us, then this external activity will stop. Everything will happen inside. You are already doing Meditation in the Practice…you’re focusing, you’re calming the mind. So this is a great practice, what we are doing. There is Pranayama, there is Meditation, and there is Asanas. So you are getting all the benefits. You bring good health to your body, you’re getting a healthy mind, and you’re getting Pranayama, Breathing, purifying the nervous system. So many things are happening in your practice and you say ‘oh, I only did Primary Series’ but I that Primary Series, for one and a half hours, you don’t know so many things are happening. You just think one day, sit and see. ‘Oh, I did Breathing, I did Posture, I was so focused in the Practice, that one and a half hour I don’t know what happened around me, I didn’t check e-mail, I didn’t see anything, I didn’t talk to anyone.’ So many things have happened, you didn’t recognize these things. With that same one and a half hours you spend outside in the coconut stand, how much gossip have you done, talking to so many people? So many distractions, so many people move around you, how many vehicles you have seen, how many people you have seen, so much disturbances happening, non-yogic. But here, so much Yoga Practice has happened. So much calmness, breathing exercises, how focused you became in one and a half hours.

AMRITA BINDU

When you practice Yoga, what happens? You become lean, thin, you lose weight, your waist will become smaller. You keep practicing for many years, suddenly, there will be a glow within you. You start looking brighter, if you do it properly, means if you take it as a Sadhana. There’ll be clarity in your speech. Even your speech will be the speech of the Divine. It will be Spiritual talk. When your mind starts thinking, it goes towards the Spiritual. When your mind goes towards there, everything changes within you. There will be clarity in your speech. You become very pure, clean, stronger, healthier. Amrita Bindu. We all have Amritu Bindu, that is the Vitality. It can be called a cell which we are all made of. Everyday Amrita Bindu drops one by one and once it falls down, we become older. So if you store it, you’ll be younger. With Yoga practice, Asana practice, it comes. That is Shirshasana, Sarvangasana…why you have to do it longer than the regular Asanas? Because it stores Amrita Bindu in your head. When you’re upside down, it won’t fall, it will be stored. That is why you have to do Shirshasana, Sarvangasana more. Some Sadhus or Sannyasi who doesn’t have family, who doesn’t have any kind of attachment, they do Kechari Mudra. They take their tongue and cut this (points to the lingual frenulum) which supports your tongue. They cut that and they make it longer. Don’t try at home (laughter in the hall). They’re not for you. Your tongue will be hanging out all the time. So the Sannyasi make the tongue longer and they take inside and try to stop the Amrita Bindu to fall. Once we age, The Amritu becomes less and less in our body. Once we store that, then we live longer, our Life will extend. That’s why storing this is very important. The digestive fire gets activated properly. Many of you do Asanas everyday, why? In Primary Series there are so many good Asanas which is good to purify your nervous system, to activate the Jatharagni so that it removes all the toxins through sweat, through exhalation. When you sweat, when you Surya Namaskara, you bring all the poison out. So the Primary Series has so many good things like Baddha Konasana, Upavishta Konasana, Supta Konasana, Janu Shirshasana A-B-C…all these Asanas are very important Asanas. When the air travels inside, when you’re doing Paschimattanasana, what happens when you’re inhaling? That inhalation will go inside and activate the digestive organs, the digestive fire will become more active and burn all the toxins which makes you healthier. How many of you struggle in Asana? Everyone shallow breath, you want to finish Asana as soon as possible, especially difficult Asanas. There is no relaxation. When the breath is very shallow, it comes in, it comes out, it’s no use. The inhalation should go deeper and come out. That’s why free breathing. Free breathing means, free flow of breath should be breath. Ujjayi is a Pranayama. It’s totally different. When you take a straw and blow in the straw, the air easily flows and comes out, makes some sound. So when you press the straw and blow, up to where you are pressing it will go smoothly, here it goes like a jet, like a vacuum cleaner, it goes zoom. That is Ujjayi Pranayama. It’s a technique when you’re doing Pranayama. There is a Khumbaka when you’re doing the Pranayama technique. So here in your regular practice, you have to relax. Inhalation, exhalation should be done properly. Easily it’s going, it’s not stopping anywhere. Nothing is holding here. Many times when we don’t do proper breathing, when we do shallow breathing, when you’re not relaxed, then also you get some muscle pain. You’re not breathing because you’re mind is somewhere else. You’re not concentrating on the practice. The more you relax, the more it is easier. The flow of breath will be easy. My Grandfather used to say…I asked how many times you have to do an Asana…he said ‘1,000 times you have to do to bring perfection in one Asana.’ Not one times, not two times, not one hundred times. One thousand times to bring perfection to that Asana. There are so many Asanas, say 650 Asanas. To bring perfection in 650 Asanas, how long it will take? It is said you have to hold one Asana for three hours, but it’s not possible because we are all doing so many Asanas. So if we have thirty Asanas, you cannot do ninety hours. You will die! (laughter). So once we do these Asanas, that free flow should be there. Once you go higher stages in practice, then you should apply this one. When you go to Dhyana, Dharana, Samadhi, these stages, then you can sit in Asana for many many hours. So once you reach those stages then you can sit in Padmasana for thirty hours, fifty hours. Now what we have to do, by doing Asana practice, we should do one hour twenty minutes for these thirty Asanas. One hour ten minutes all Primary Series then ten fifteen minutes for all finishing. One hour twenty minutes, twenty five minutes, you have to finish your practice. This allows the blood to circulate properly. Sometimes Surya Namaskara, lazy practice. You can’t even lift your hands. They fight with someone before coming, they have some problems, they come they cannot do Asana, they do it very slowly. Where you will generate Internal Energy, Internal Heat? To generate Internal Heat, you should practice, keep one rhythm. Once you keep that rhythm, your body also will become flexible. When we do this Vinyasa everyday, jumping back, inhalation, exhalation, synchronizing that with the postures, we generate Internal Heat. It makes the blood warm, it circulates and removes the toxins outside. If you do it slowly that is also bad, if you do it too fast that is also bad. You have to keep it one pace in the middle, not too fast, not too slow. If you do it too fast also, do Surya Namaskara A and B for two minutes, that is not good for your heart. You’re not relaxing in the posture, in each posture. So you have to keep one rhythm. If you understand also the Vinyasa, where to inhale, where to exhale, you will become more flexible. Led class is very important, so that you know where to inhale, where to exhale. That you put in your Mysore class. When you do your own practice, then you apply that, keep one rhythm. It will improve a lot, your practice will change. In the cold season especially, if you do little bit faster practice, then your body also will get more warmer, you’ll get more flexible. Then comes in the last, Nadi Shuddhi. Nadi Shuddhi means to purify the nervous system. This is the main tool to purify your nervous system, is your Breath. Breath, if you take inhalation, exhalation properly, then the Nadi Shuddhi will happen. The blood will circulate properly. For example, here in Mysore, I don’t want you to fall. I tell you not to ride your scooter but still you won’t listen to me, you don’t follow. You get scratch here then you put something. You put something but don’t stop practice at least when you cannot do everything do Surya Namaskara A, Surya Namaskara B whatever you can, it will heal very quickly. Normally it takes one month for this to heal but if you practice it takes twenty days to heal. Because once I had a scooter, same, but I was on the right side…(laughter after having been reminded about scooters and realizing Sharthji rode one for his own 😛), I was on the left side. This one guy took a bus and hit me, I fell, I had lots of scratches everywhere. I was crazy about my practice. I used to ride from Gokulam to Lakshmipuram everyday. Never I used to stop. Maybe I stop only two days in my whole nine years of practice. One day I had a very severe fever and cold, that is why I stopped. But everyday I used to drive from here to there, Gokulam to Lakshmipuram, nine years, everyday traveling. Whatever if it’s raining. In the monsoon there’s lots of rain, the trees used to fall on the road but still I used to manage and go. So everyday I was practice and then all this wound would heal. I didn’t put any medicine. It healed very quickly. Because the blood circulation will happen inside. Sometimes we have bruises, once the blood circulates, it will heal. Internal injuries also. If there is any problem inside you, not because of accident, but internal injury, it will heal because I myself I did this experiment with one student. We all have one tube to inhale for us, he had two. So the body didn’t know where to inhale. So the doctor said you have to teach him, breathing technique, so this nerve will die. There was two, one small, one big. I taught him many, Surya Namskara, breathing technique, all this what we do in the morning, same things! Then the other nerve died, only one was there, he became more healthier, doctor said he improved a lot. So there are many good things about Primary Series, lots of health benefits, for Asthma, for Bronchitis, Blood Pressure, so many problems. One solution, use Primary Series. Amrita Bindu doesn’t go away, it will generate again. What you eat, become blood, blood becomes vitality, vitality becomes Amrita Bindu. Everyday it’s producing, it’s not only losing. The production will be limited when you’re not doing exercise, when you’re not doing this kind of techniques. So reproducing also will be more. So whatever is stored, then we don’t have to lose it. That’s why if you see Yogis, they always look young. Why is that? Because they have stored their Amrita Bindu. That’s why for Shirshasana you can do one yama. One yama is you can do two hours, three hours if you have time. But the technique you should know how to do it. Some people they do Shirshasana, they put their weight on their head, then the blood clot, they go crazy, doctor says no don’t do this. Many people say if you have blood pressure don’t do Shirshasana, they’ll scare you. There is a technique to do Shirshasana. If you follow those techniques, then you can hold it for long time. When we age, everything becomes slower. When you’re young, twenty years, you think you can lift Chamundi Hill! But when you get older, you can’t lift Chamundi Hill. Can’t even lift one chair. But see Yogis…I’m 43, how many students we are lifting everyday? 150 students in back bending everyday. But if you see, you do your practice early in the morning, see the whole day you’ll be so energized, you have so much energy. If you don’t do, you become so dull, no energy. One week you stop, don’t do anything, see how you’ll be. Your face will become so dull.

MAINTAINING THE PRACTICE

Focus means don’t get yourself distracted with many things. Outside world is very distracted. When you get wiser in your Yoga Practice, your mind also will get the capability of judging, which is wrong, which is bad, which is not good for me, which will be good for me. Like suddenly if someone asked me to come at ten o’clock at night, I won’t go because I know next time I practice I will suffer. Whoever it is, if it is Prime Minister also I won’t go, because I know I have to get up in the morning, I have to do my practice. That is very important for me. This has been there for twenty five years. So once you say ‘oh I’ve been practicing everyday, I’ve been lifting everyday’ and enjoy night life, it’s not possible. Then I have to suffer for the whole month. It’s not like that. My mind is already focused. Everything will change. Suddenly you see people who start practicing Yoga, they will say they used to hang around with their friends, they used to spend so much time. As soon as they started Yoga, something changed. Now they don’t feel like going. So this kind of judging will happen within you. That is the Personal Sadhana which happens within you. Many say you just want to practice Yoga like you to go to the gym and lifting weights. But when you go the gym, it’s just physical. There is no Spirituality in lifting weights. It’s just to build your muscle. But when you do Asana Practice it is totally different. You do Asana Practice for one month, two month, your mind totally changes. That is called the Spirituality. Your way of thinking will change. Your Perception towards this Life will change. You’ll get a better meaning for this Life. Everything changes, the your mind will also change. Mind will say ‘don’t go out’, ‘don’t have that friends’, ‘don’t have bad influence’. You have to get up early morning, you have to practice Yoga, otherwise you’ll get scolded by Teacher (chuckles). That is why Teacher is very important, a Guru is very important. Why? He will wake you up and say ‘come here and do your practice’, he will wake you up when you are sleeping. Never trust a Guru who says ‘oh it’s ok’, he will make you sleep. The more you sleep, the more he will get profitable. But real Guru will wake you up, he says ‘no don’t do this, wake up now, put your mind towards that, towards Spirituality, go towards Divine, think about it!’. When we bless someone we bless them for hundred years. Why you need hundred years? At least in that hundred years, once you put your mind towards that Divine.

ON PAIN AND INJURIES

If you have injuries and pain, you take extra breaths, it’s no problem. It’s actually good when you have some health problems, it’s good to take extra breaths. You can’t follow exactly Vinyasa. But it’s healing also. Vinyasa not only means jumping back, jumping through. You’re relaxing in the posture, the flow of the inhalation, exhalation is also Vinyasa. In between Asana, inhalation, exhalation, you’re sitting in the Asana, inhalation, exhalation, everything is like a chain. You call it chain because it’s liked to one toward another to another to another. If you break it you don’t call it chain.

HUMBLE ACTION

First you stop in saying ‘I’ ‘I’ ‘I’. Western mind always, you try to say something ‘I know’. Say ‘I don’t know’. ‘I don’t know anything’. ‘You know better than me’. It is like marketing yourself, it’s like telling people ‘I’m better than you’, ‘I know’. I can’t say I know everything. Yoga is Bigger. Many things I don’t know. In the ocean if you take couple of buckets of water, and say you’ve taken the water of the ocean. It’s not possible. Ocean is very big. You’ve taken only a few buckets from the ocean. You can’t take the whole. Yoga is also like that. Our action should always be Humble Action. Inside you should be very humble. Karuna, Compassion, everything, this is what our Life is. Otherwise, we become like animals. Animals are also very good actually, they don’t have greed. Like tigers, they have to kill animals because otherwise there will be seers everywhere. They need to keep the Ecosystem. That is why God has created this one and that one, why? Because everything needs to be intact. Everything should be balanced. After ten days it won’t eat again anymore. But humans see, they want more and more. They will do all of these bad things to gain more money. Politicians see? They have so much money. Half of it if they gave to the poor, there will be no poor people in this country or anywhere. Greed. I want this, I want that. Who is better now? Tell me. Who is Wise? Who is Spiritual? Who is following? The way of thinking of humans. Don’t try to change. Nobody can change the world. But you can change yourself. The change happens within you. Then once you change yourself, then the whole world will change. If you care for people, if you care for trees, if you care for animals, if you care for everything. Even children. Two is enough so we can give them good air, good food. I’m planting four trees now so I have six children. Those are my children. I’m planting more trees so people who walk here will have good air. So once you care for other people, that is the meaning of Life. Not caring for yourself. Yes you need money, you need everything, but there is a limit. Just to earn money you can’t kill someone, you can’t cheat someone, you can’t do bad things to others. You have to care for them. That is the meaning of Life. That should be your action. You have to care for everyone. Then your Practice will change. Not only getting Eka Pada, Kapotasana, you’re so excited everyday, you practice four times. Your purpose, your Spiritual, your Practice is for Kapotasana? Or gain good knowledge, gain clarity within you? Kapotasana should help to gain that, not to grow your Ego. ‘Oh I can do Kapotasana…Photo! Photo!’ The Whole Practice is to change yourself.

PERFECTION

Perfection is when you are comfortable in the Asana. Sthira Sukham Asanam. Sthira means you’re stable in your posture. Sukham means you’re comfortable in your posture. That is Asana. That is Perfection. And the way how you do the posture. That also should be correct.

ON DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS

It’s not PaschimOttanasana, it’s PaschimAttanasana. For constipation, stay longer in Baddha Konasana, stay for 8 breaths, even Marichyasana B when the heel will press in. Baddha Padmasana, Yoga Mudra, when you do perfectly, your liver and spleen it will press in, which is good for digestion, for constipation.

PERSONAL MANTRA AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE DIVINE

In the opening Mantra when the students say OM in the end, I say my personal Mantra. That is thanking all of the Lineage which brought this Yoga Practice to us, this breathing technique. It’s actually Shankaracharya’s Mantra.
NARAYANAM PADMA-BHAVAM VASHISHTHAM
SHAKTIM CHA TAT PUTRA PARASHARAM CHA
VYASAM SHUKAM GAUDA-PADAM MAHANTAM
GOVINDA YOGINDRAM ATHASYA SHISHYAM
SHRI SHANKARA CHARYAM ATHASYA PADMA
PADAM CHA HASTAMALAKAM CHA SHISHYAM
TAM TROTAKAM VARTIKA KARAM ANYAN
ASMAD GURUN SANTATA MANATOSMI
Like that, there are many Mantras which are personal Mantra.
BRAHMADHOBYO BRAHMA VIDHYA SAMPRADHAYA
KARTHUBHYO VAMSARISHIBYO MAHADBHYO
NAMO GURBHYA SARVOPAPLAVA RAHITHA,
PRAJNANA GHANA PRATHYAGARDHO BRAHMAIVAHA MASMI
This knowledge is not ordinary knowledge, it is the Knowledge of the Divine. So we thank. The Divine for bringing this Knowledge to us. You can’t go to market and buy Spirituality. It’s not like buying iPhone 6. How Spirituality comes? Through Paramparā, through a Lineage, through the Divine. So it’s always good to thank that. Without that the Knowledge doesn’t come to us. In Bahagavad-Gita Krishna says that Yoga didn’t come, it is there for millions and millions of years. When Krishna was there we had Four Yugas, four different times. Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapara Yuga, Kali Yuga now. This cycle goes again. After Kali Yuga again many many bad things will happen. When this bad things ends, Satya Yuga comes, the True Yuga. Everyone’s actions will be pure, everyone will be Yogis. So this four stages is one cycle. This Yoga is not new, it is very old. That means there is not date for Yoga when it started. It has come from generation to generation, Paramparā. Now there is no Paramparā in many teachings. Paramparā means the True Knowledge which has to flow to you through a Guru. It took twenty five years for me, now I’m understanding Yoga. It has to flow from the Lineage, automatically, the Knowledge will grow within you. That is nourishment, what you get for your Guru. Many times you get lost in your life. Mind is like monkey. It’s jumping here and there. That is why Yogas Chitta Vritti Nirodhāh. Chitta means mind, Vritti means it doesn’t stay in one place. It keeps on going here and there. So make your mind sit in one place. Many people get confused, ‘control your mind’. To calm your mind is Chitta Vritti Nirodhāh, not completely stop it. Nirodhāh means stop the unnecessary things. Many people think ‘I won’t think’, then you can’t even walk, you can’t even sit, you can’t even eat. It is cutting off unnecessary distractions, to bring more focus within you, bring more focus within your practice. That is called Yoga. You need to think to do Asanas also. You cut off thinking, then you can’t even do Asanas. In Patanjali’s Sutras, is one verse, has big meaning. Only Sadhana can give the answer to that. Only Asana can give you clarity what it means. Without your Sadhana it’s not possible to understand what it is.

THE SCULPTURE WITHIN

If you want to maintain discipline, come and stay with me, I’ll show you (smiles, laughter in the hall). I’ll give you Prakash’s job. You do what I do. Will you follow? You have to get up 12:45 in the morning, go to bed at 8 o’clock, you have to handle two children and one wife, five hundred students. First you get married, then your wife will whip you. She’ll put you on track. (Laughter). No, my wife is not like that. In your Sadhana, if you see an artist who does all the sculptures…once he sees a big rock, he wants to do a sculpture out of it. He is so focused because of his own experience. That is also a Sadhana. He sees what we don’t see. Everyday we pass by a big stone but this artist when he sees this big stone, suddenly he gets this big idea in his mind. This is not ordinary and he can do something out of it. And then he carves a beautiful sculpture out of it. But creative that, what he does? He puts everything! He puts a Sadhana. Each and every minute is very important for him. Each and every action is very important for him. Each and every thought, what he thinks, what he can do. Even just one small finger in the sculpture he has to think. If you go and talk to him for many hours he will get angry, he will say ‘go I have to do my one Sadhana!’ Then he carves this beautiful sculpture which is priceless. Yoga Practice is like that. There is no physical thing, everything is happening within you. Everything is happening within You. The sculpture is within You. The sculpture is Yoga, the Experience, the Understanding. To carve that Sculpture within you, you have to do lots of sacrifice, you have to do lots of Sadhana, you have to let go of many things. If you just want to do Asana, you want to be fit and come to Mysore that is also ok, but that doesn’t count as Sadhana. You won’t understand what Yoga is. How you carve your Self in the Spiritual Practice, that is very important. Sadhana is very easy to say, but behind that, there is so many Sacrifice. Many people, they get bored, they say ‘oh many years I do Primary Series, everyday Surya Namaskara, Same Asana…’ For me it’s different, if I don’t do…even Primary Series will make me happy. Just doing Primary Series, you’re mind gets so calm, get more focused. How it is possible to teach fromfour o’clock to 11:45am? I sit here everyday I open my eyes. It’s because of this Practice. My Grabdfather used to sit here like this (Padmasana on chair), watch me practice; never used to blink, he used to chant Mantras, everyday three o’clock. He could’ve chanted inside but he was always watching…

Why Ashtanga is not Calisthenics

With snowflakes falling endlessly from the white sky, thinking of the blue sky and the warm sun of Mysore of a week ago make me wonder I was in a dream.

I was thinking, why is it snow so wonderful and gracious when rain is not? I can see an interesting analogy between Ashtanga and Calisthenics, some of the exercises may look similar if not the same, but what makes Yoga so special as compared to Calisthenics or to common gymnastic?
Calisthenics has the great advantage that can be performed anywhere at anytime, what is needed is the knowledge of how to use the environment to exercise our body. Similarly even rain can happen anywhere at anytime, just needs the right pressure to exercise its potential into actuality. Please I am not saying that calisthenics has no values or no fun in it, but something more essential is missing, something more fundamental for our inner self.

Ashtanga is like snow, as the flakes falls delicately the practice flows with grace and bliss from the first Suria Namaskara to Shavasana. As for snow to be a correct balance in between temperature, pressure and humidity is required, even in Ashtanga we need to connect the three elements of Ujjayi breath, Drishti and Bandhas. Only while doing it the mind will be one pointed and cleared by all mental manipulations. As the second Yoga Sutra states “Yogas chitta vritti Nirodhah.”

Before going to explain what Ujjay, Bandhas and Drishti are it is required to lay the foundation and explain what are the eight limbs of Ashtanga. Because it is from the understanding of these that we will became aware that Vinyasa goes beyond the mere physical practice but includes in itself an ethical, social and meditative side. As the world Ashta in Sanskrit means eight, this discipline can be considered the eightfold path of Yoga or liberation.

In order to attain the real state of Yoga the all eight limbs need to be activated and they all have to work in synchrony in the mat during practice but also during our daily life. As Yoga is not a mere physical practice and neither a religion but it has to become or better we need to grow out of our daily routine and realize to be living in Yoga. I am personally against pushing things to happen, so if you take the eight limbs and force your lifestyle to be in accordance with them even if your mind is unhappy this will still be a vritti or wave of the mind, therefore lead to inner conflict and you will fail to realize the supreme truth. We need to use the text as directions and suggestions but the change has to grow from our inner rather than being imposed upon.

The first limb is called Yama. It is a set of ethical notions to direct the practitioner into a harmonious lifestyle with the society s/he lives in. The second is known as Nyama that comprehend a set of things to perform to ensure the inner and outer clearness of the body and to train the mind to be clear and focused. The third is the limb of the postures, or Asana. Interestingly in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali there is no reference to any Asana, as we now know them. Even in the Bhagavad Gita none of the complicate posture is suggested. All we can find is when Lord Krishna is teaching Arjuna on the art of meditating saying that “sitting and making the mind one pointed is meditation.” (BG 6-11/12)

The all series of Asana practiced in the Vinyasa method is a mere sequence of posture connecting breath and focus to open the energy channel of the body, to keep it healthy and capable of staying sitting in Padmasana and meditate for a long time without having physical distractions.

The fourth limb is Pranayama and it is normally translated as the control of the breath. It is necessary to say that Prana can be see as the breath that bring oxygen to the physical body but it also mean the life force. With the right control on the way we breath we can learn to direct the life force to specific areas of our body that needs it more. This require a stable breath, therefore the Ujjayi breath practiced during the Vinyasa sequence is a method through which the mind will be fully absorbed in listening to the sound of the breath, and ultimately find its peace. Even this is contained in the second line of the Yoga Sutras, the vrittis are the oscillation of the mind and as yoga has to control these through the breath.

Here we are, at the fifth and last limb connected to the physical body. Pratyahara is normally translated as sense withdrawal. I would say that it is the focus on the inner rather than on the outer side of us. The other three limbs are Dharana (concentration), Dyana (meditation) and Samadi. These will need a deep explanation so to avoid misunderstanding I rather stop with their introduction for coming back at due time.

"May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all." Loka Samasta Sukino Bhavantu

Vinyasa and Yoga Sutras are two side of the same coin, not separate substances

It has been almost two years since I started assisting students into the discovery of Yoga. I say discovery because through the practice of Vinyasa (Asana combined with Pranayama) you do not learn or start Yoga, you discover you are already in Yoga. From the moment you came closer to this discipline you manifested an inner quest for something that goes beyond this material plane. You might not be aware of it but if the river of life brought you here is to give you some knowledge on how to use the tools we are given by birth to question and understand the reality of this universe.

Just look around you and notice how this world is spinning frenetically, we are all running from morning to night, even though we do not know why and recognizing that most of us are not content in doing this. This is the reality we live in so we have no other choice to follow. My initial intention was to teach the art of meditation, so to give a moment of rest for the mind and to allow people with different needs to have an easy way out from this madness. What I learned from my students is that it is not easy to bring peace to a mind that overwhelmed by thoughts. I had to ponder about the to do when the sentence of Sri Pattabhi Jois “Ashtanga is 99% practice and 1% theory” came to help me. With pure meditation I was opposing this vertigo of energy that encompasses today’s world, an energy that is well established and as strong as the wave of an ocean. Instead I needed to change my approach and as a good sailor to use the waves and the wind to reach my goal rather than fighting.

I then started teaching Asana and Pranayama and after almost two years with great pleasure I saw the change on the most dedicated students. I learned from them the pleasure of passing an art as old as mankind; every improvement by them is like honey to my humming soul. I learned that the meditation I wanted to pass was not the only way of contemplating the universe, we can adopt and learn to meditate actively and this has better chances to work in a society that does not allow us to sit. Sri Ramana Maharshi considered useless to all go and retire in caves in some god-forsaken mountain to reach enlightenment, we do not need to take a path but to realize that we are the path. Karma Yoga or the Yoga of action is what we need to undertake. As the Bhagavad Gita states “the one who, controlling the sense organs with the mind, remaining unattached, takes the yoga of action is a man of knowledge.” (BG-3.7) Knowledge here is not to be intended as scholastic knowledge but rather is the understanding of the functioning of the universe.

This is why the practice of Vinyasa is so efficient in today’s society.

The great advantage of the Vinyasa system is that it requires only a few hours of daily practice, leaving time for people to perform their daily routine. Exactly as I experienced personally, people do not need to become Sanyasis or Ashetic and to have a monastic life in order to attain knowledge of the absolute.

Its lineage, or Parampara, was passed from Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya to Sri Pattabhi Jois. Krishnamacharya was also the guru of BKS Iyengar, the father Hata Yoga that recently reached his Mahasamadhi. The legend wants that Krishnamacharia was a devote students of Ramamohan Brahmachary from whom he studies from the least remaining copy of the Yoga Kurunta, a text in which the sage Vamana had noted a series of asana and a commentary of the yoga sutras he received in a vision while meditating.

As many people approach yoga for physical needs, a feeling of lacking can be suddenly perceived. Other people decide to intensify the transcendental side of them, practicing meditation and studying the Yoga Sutras of Patanjani but yet they have a feeling that something is missing. This because the Vinyasa system and the Yoga Sutras do not have to be considered as two separate entities but rather as the two faces of the same coin.

In the coming posts we are going to have an overview on the eight limbs of Ashtanga yoga and gradually study them in more depth and detail including also the philosophical notions of the Yoga Sutras.

Please do feel free to leave a comment, critique and request so to make this blog more personal but yet open to the global.
